Summary
Massive yellow to orange encrusting sponge with a convoluted apearance.
The surface is often covered by substrate or algue. Fills cavities in
reefs and grows in sand and rubble. Lives at 20 m or deeper.
To be confused with
Not to be distinguished from Myrmekioderma gyroderma or Didiscus oxeatus by sight.
Characteristics
Size: Diameter of the sponge up to one meter.
Colour: Yellow to orange but colour may be obscured by sediment or algue.
Shape: Encrusting with with ridges and valleys, forming a maze-like pattern. Openings raised.
Consistency: Soft and crumbly.
Habitat environment and ecology
Protected reefs and ruble or sand at 20 m or deeper.
Distribution range
BES-eilanden: Bonaire, St. Eustatius
Specifics
Not to be distinguished from Myrmekioderma gyroderma by sight. Myrmekioderma sp. would be better.
