Summary

Saltwater fish, Damselfishes. Dark brown to blackish in front and pale to white in the rear, sometimes a patch of orange mid body and yellow fins.

To be confused with

- Cocoa damselfish Stegastes variabilis.
- Yellowtail Damselfish Microspathodon chrysurus.

Characteristics

Size: 5 to 9 cm, max 10 cm.
Colour: Dark area may only cover upper head or exstand past midbody to base of tail. Pale area often yellowish near boundary, especially toward belly.
Shape: Body laterally flattened, oval in profile.

Habitat environment and ecology

Inhabits coral reefs. Found near the top of the coral heads, often in the company of chromises. Agressively territorial, but tend to guard only a small area.

Distribution range

BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
