Summary
Saltwater. True Crabs. Is found in shallow waters, strictly herbivorous.
Is associated with the sea urchin Diadema antillarum, hiding between
the seaurchins for shelter from preditors like fish and other invertebrates.
To be confused with
- Tidal Spray Crab Plagusia depressa
Characteristics
Size: carapace 3 cm wide.
Color: legs with yellow rings at the joints.
Shape: Each of the five pairs of walking legs has a row of spines along the leading edge.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits reefs. Females carrying eggs have been caught off West
Africa between February and April and August; the larvae which hatch
from then are planktonic and long-lived, which may contribute to the
species' invasiveness.
