(Blainville, 1823)
Code
Summary
Saltwater Squids. Inhabits the shallower waters, usually nearer to the
surface than the reefs, commonly in small schools of 4-30.
Characteristics
Size: 15 to 20, max 30 cm.
Colour: The colouring is, as with all cephalopods, highly variable. Usually a reddish cast over a bluish body.
Shape: This squid is somewhat cigar shaped. Along the entire side runs a fin, which is pointed at the end. The arms of this squid are shorter than the body.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs. Like other cephalopods, the Caribbean reef squid,
is semelparous, dying after reproducing. Females lay their eggs then die
immediately after. The males, however, canfertilize many females in a
short period of time before they die. Females lay the eggs in
well-protected areas scattered around the reefs.
