Summary
Saltwater fish, Damselfishes. Found on coral reefs, sandy bottoms and
tide-pools. When not spawning they live alone or in small groups. When
in spawning cycle they merge into large schools. Males guard their (red)
eggs for four days.
To be confused with
- Dusky Damselfish Stegastes adustus.
Characteristics
Size: 10 to 15 cm, max 17,5 cm.
Colour: Silvery tot greyish-white with 5 dark bars, yellowback and dusky fins. Purple eggs.
Shape: Body laterally flattened, oval in profile.
Fins: Caudalfin is forked.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs. Occurs above steep slopes and patch reefs, between 2 and 40 m.

BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
