Summary
Saltwater fish. Damselfishes. Small Ovals. Dorsal and anal fins extend
only to insertion of tail fin rays into tail base. Narrow dark edge on
anal fin. Juvenile: Brilliant orange wash from snout across nape
continuing to near end of spinous dorsal fin. Body laterally flattened,
oval in profile. Found in surgy areas of the reef, shallower than 4,5
meter.

- Longfin Damselfish Stegastes diencaeus
- Threespot Damselfish Stegastes planifrons
Characteristics
Size: 8 to 13 cm.
Colour: Deep brown-gray to blackish body with scales having dark edges, that align to form vertical lines. Juveniles bluish-silver grey with blue markings on the head and back.
Shape: Body laterally flattened, oval in profile.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs. Occurs above steep slopes and patch reefs, between 2 and 40 m. Fiercly defend their territory.
