Summary
Saltwaterfish. Porcupinefishes. Inhabits shallow reefs and grassy
bottoms. Bad swimmer, prefers to hide. Body covered with spines which
lay normally flat but become erect when the fish is inflated. Shy fish.
To be confused with
- Balloonfish Diodon holocanthus
- Web Burrfish Chilomycterus antillarum
Characteristics
Size: 30 to 60 cm, max 90 cm.
Colour: Pale brown covered with black spots. When exited it can pale or darken, showing dusky bars.
Shape: Odly shaped fish, more like a balloon, especially when they are inflated with water. Body covered with spines which lay normally flat but become erect when the fish is inflated.
Remarks: Clumsy swimmer at best.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs, shallow reefs and grassy bottoms. Bad swimmer and a shy fish, prefers to hide.

BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
