Summary
Saltwater fish, Squirrelfish. By day it is found resting in dark areas
of the reef. At night it becomes an active feeder. Can be approached.
To be confused with
- Squirrelfish Holocentrus adscensionis. (No white tip at end of dorsal fin.)
Characteristics
Size: 12-25 cm, max 35 cm.
Colour: Silvery red, with orange-gold body stripes, white tip at end of dorsal fin.
Shape: The eyes are very large and red, as it is nocturnal.
Fins: Spines are sharp and can infrict painful wounds.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs. By day it is found resting in dark areas of the reef. At night it becomes active.
