Saltwater species. Hydrocorals. Colonies form fan-like structures of branches.
To be confused with
- Red coral Corallium rubrum
Characteristics
Size: 2.5 to 10 cm
Colour: Purple to burgundy or lavender near the base, fading to pink and white toward the tips of the branches. Occasionally all white.
Shape: Colonies fan-like, with branches in one plane.
Habitat environment and ecology
Inhabits coral reefs, protected, shaded areas of reefs, often in caves or crevices, from 6 to 30 m depths.
Distribution range
BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
